Dear MOSTe Community,

As we embrace November, a month that embodies gratitude and generosity, I want to take a moment to celebrate the remarkable spirit of giving within our MOSTe community. Your unwavering support is essential to our mission, enabling us to create transformative opportunities for young women that inspire and empower them.

This year, we are excited to launch our End of Year Give Fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $20,000. These funds will help our scholars, providing essential resources for workshops, college access programming, and career pathway cohorts, ensuring every student has the opportunity to pursue her dreams.

I invite you to visit our End of Year Give Fundraising page to learn how your donation can transform lives. Every contribution, no matter the size, sends a powerful message that our community believes in these young women and is invested in their futures.

MOSTe stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment, reminding us of the transformative power of community and mentorship. Together, we can continue being a space where women can thrive, lead, and inspire future generations.

With gratitude,

Nicole Fisher

GEMA Cohort Session: Marketing – The Big Picture

Our GEMAxMOSTe Scholars met with Kayla Karlsson, the manager of Global Marketing at GEMA. Kayla is a marketing manager with hands-on experience in entertainment, media, sports, and commercial real estate marketing.

During the session, scholars took a high-level look at what marketing is and gained a clear understanding of the field. Scholars were also asked to complete pre-assignments where they introduced themselves as if they were a brand!

Here are one such introduction below:

“Hello, I’m Roxy, and I’m all about quality time and sharing laughs, whether it’s exploring new places or just being with good company. If I were a brand, I’d be all about celebrating soccer, especially women’s sports, and discovering the beauty in science sports.”

MOSTe Youth Ambassador Takeover: Election Season Engagement: Empowering Our Community Through Education and Action

This election season, MOSTe launched an inspiring and educational campaign on Instagram, highlighting the rich history of women’s suffrage and the importance of civic participation. Our initiative unfolded in two impactful parts:

Celebrating Voter Participation:
We invited our community members to share their pride in exercising their democratic right by submitting selfies with their “I voted” stickers. This visual celebration not only fostered a sense of community but also encouraged wider participation among our followers.

Behind-the-Scenes Look at Election Day:
In a compelling Instagram Takeover, MOSTe senior Jessenia M. offered a firsthand glimpse into the electoral process. As a poll worker on General Election Day, Jessenia shared her experience, from the preparatory stages to the excitement of facilitating democracy in action. Her dedication was evident as she helped check in an impressive 165 voters throughout the day.

Through this campaign, MOSTe reinforced its commitment to empowering young women as informed, engaged citizens ready to shape the future of their communities.

SAT Strategies with MOSTe: Empowering Our Juniors for Success!

As college applications loom on the horizon, our Class of 2026 has taken a significant step towards their academic future by diving into the world of standardized testing. Recently, our juniors participated in the first of two crucial sessions designed to demystify the SAT and ACT.

Session A: Laying the Foundation:

This inaugural session provided our scholars with essential knowledge:

Understanding the SAT and ACT: We explored the structure and purpose of these critical exams.

Registration Process: Step-by-step guidance on how to sign up for these tests.

Free Study Resources: We introduced valuable, cost-effective tools to help our scholars prepare effectively.

Our juniors demonstrated their engagement through insightful questions, showcasing their commitment to this important process. Many have already gained valuable experience by taking the PSAT at their schools, giving them a head start in their preparation journey.

Mentor Moment

We are excited to announce that MOSTe recently hosted our inaugural Mentor Social! This gathering provided a wonderful opportunity for our mentors to connect, share experiences, and strengthen their bonds within our community. On Saturday, November 9th, mentors came together at The Broad Museum in Los Angeles to explore art, engage in meaningful conversations, and enjoy each other’s company. Following our museum visit, we continued the festivities at Grand Central Market, where everyone savored a variety of delicious lunch options while getting to know one another even better. We are immensely grateful to all the mentors who joined us and contributed to the success of this event! Your dedication and support are what make MOSTe such a vibrant community.

Mentee and I were officially matched this month! To kick-off our mentor-mentee relationship, we decided to have our enjoying her favorite lunch meal which is pasta. We had lunch with her mom where we discussed expectations of the mentor/mentee relationship as well as got to know each other and our interests. We’re looking forward to the fun journey ahead!

Mentee and I went to brunch and caught up on school and her upcoming Homecoming dance! It was great to catch up.
-Kelly K

My mentee and I got into the Halloween spirit by attending an outdoor movie! We enjoyed popcorn and candy on a rooftop in DTLA whilst watching The Addams Family. Pure fun!
– Jodie D.

My Mentee and I went to visit the Michael Myers house and toured the surrounding area to visit scenes where the movie, Halloween, was filmed. We also had some hot chocolate & checked out the gallery behind the Myers house!
-Amanda C

We met at coffee bean, bought some drinks and food, updated each other on our lives, and worked on her college applications. It was a nice and productive day!

This month’s outing was a trip to the Buddhist temple in Covina where my mentee and her family go. There is an annual event there centered around the dying of a robe for a monk. There are also offerings to 50 visiting monks and a parade and other activities. I participated with my mentee in the offerings and the parade. It is a big social event for the Sri Lankan community in Los Angeles. It also helps reconnect them with their Sri Lankan culture as there are cultural dances and costumes and foods and so on. It was a great event!! We also discussed moving away from home to live in a dorm for college as one of her friends who was there is attending UC Riverside and lives in a dorm. It was good to get her positive perspective as her family is probably similar to my mentee’s in terms of being very protective.

Sandra Rice and I took our mentees to Exposition Park and explored the Natural History Museum. We then walked over to the USC Campus and walked all around, looking at all the buildings and the statues, and seeing the students all around the campus. We spoke to them about how they might feel in that space and if the could imagine it one day. We had lunch on the campus and talked a bit about school and grades, and what colleges they’re interested in. It was a long day, but we stopped for ice cream on the way home and played games in the car. Everyone had a really good time!
-Terry M. and Sandra R.

My mentee and I had brunch and then went to USC’s Pacific Asia Museum. We saw an interesting exhibit about a Chinese artist who uses gunpowder in his work. Then we participated in some fun activities at the museum – creating art ourselves!
– Natalie Z.

During the month of October, my mentees and I communicated via text, email and in person. One of my mentee’s and I met for breakfast at the Americana in Glendale. They are a junior in high school, and they shared their accomplishments during this busy school year. Additionally, my other mentee had mentioned they wanted us to go on a college tour. She reached out to Cal State University Northridge (CSUN) and scheduled a college tour. The college tour was the perfect outing for us. My other mentee also joined us on this college tour and we had a great time.
-Elba S

During October, my mentee and I had the chance to meet virtually. We talked about our interests and favorite hobbies. Talking about these things helped us learn about each other. We also talked about school and what classes she is taking. My mentee expressed that she is currently doing virtual school and enjoys it. When she gets the chance she goes out to coffee shops and studies there.
