MOSTe January 2023 Newsletter

Dear MOSTe Family,

The College and Alumnae Homecoming Brunch this past Sunday was a beautiful occasion to reflect on the intention and impact of our work. It’s truly inspiring to see our scholars mature into such thoughtful and accomplished young people, pursuing an impressive range of interests and careers including the arts and academia, law and medicine, entrepreneurship and social service. It was also a pleasure to see them making new connections around current interests and goals, and see how they will continue to be a network of support and encouragement for each other going forward.

Many thanks once again to everyone who was able to make a gift to our year-end campaign! January is National Mentoring Month, reminding us to honor those who contribute their time and experience to support our scholars, as well. We’re also excited to welcome two new Board Members, Edwin Huang and Loreal Harper!

Edwin Huang is a Senior Associate at PwC and graduate of USC. His passion for educational equity was sparked by serving in the university’s Joint Educational Project, when a student told him her family could not afford her dream college’s tuition. “As a first-generation college student from a low-income family myself, I understood her concern and was able to provide value by teaching her the process and the importance of applying for financial aid.”

Loreal Harper is an HR and Culture Manager with degrees from CSU Long Beach and National University. Her experience in higher education and operations fuels her to inspire great teams and lead forward-thinking innovation that produces results. “I’ve always believed that education is key, and care deeply about supporting equitable access, exposure and encouragement. I’m excited to be a part of MOSTe and have the opportunity to make a difference.”

Youth Ambassador Wrap-Up

In December we concluded our first cohort of Youth Ambassadors. Our six Ambassadors spent the semester brainstorming program themes, leading activities and helping to facilitate workshops. As a community they worked hard to make sure all students felt included, and as individuals we saw them grow as leaders, communicators and facilitators. We are excited to continue the Youth Ambassador Program this spring, and learn from and with a new cohort of young leaders!

College and Alumnae Homecoming Brunch

What a joy to celebrate with our returning scholars and friends! Sruti Bharat of FutureMap led an empowering discussion about career goals, ways to reframe success, and negotiating challenges specific to first-generation graduates. The combined reunions and new connections made for an inspiring start to the year.

We invite all alums to follow @moste.alumnae on Insta, and will be sending invitations to join our alumnae Slack channel shortly!
