MOSTe April 2023 Newsletter
Dear MOSTe Family,
The Lanterns Awards are next week! Be sure to get your tickets for the April 20 event, so you can join us to celebrate our pathbreaking honorees and hear from our Youth Ambassadors.
This year’s Lanterns will be particularly full circle: not only will MOSTe Alumna Rachel Ofili be interviewing honoree Ariel Fan, but the evening’s host will be Alumna Sally Jaramillo, now a Weather Anchor on the Spectrum News 1 team. We are so proud of Rachel and Sally for all they have accomplished, and thrilled to see them step up as inspiring role models for our younger scholars!
Onward,
Amy Ludwig

MOSTe in Action
March Financial Literacy Workshop
Our March workshop focused on money matters. Juniors learned about financial aid options for college, and the rest of our scholars learned about more general financial terms and strategies. Our Youth Ambassadors then led a session on financial decision making. Students were asked to decide how to manage a hypothetical college student budget. Would students choose to live off campus, or in a college dorm? Would they cook their own meals, get a meal plan, or eat out? Students were able to decide and see the impact of their decisions.
Intuit Career Panel
Two MOSTe Scholars, Victoria and Arianna, participated as student moderators on a panel of women in technology hosted by the LA Clippers in partnership with Intuit. Victoria and Arianna facilitated the career panel and were able to connect with the amazing Intuit employees. Thank you to the LA Clippers for inviting MOSTe Scholars to lead this event for the second year in a row!
JPL Tour
Last Friday a small group of scholars enjoyed a fascinating tour of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, led by Europa Mission Payload Manager Josh St. Vaughn. Josh shared his passion for STEM and space exploration, explained how rovers are developed, and gave us an insider’s view of his current project. He encouraged our scholars to continue their interest in STEM. “Their ideas and work are sorely needed!”
High School Highlights
Portland College Tour
During LAUSD Spring Break, 13 MOSTe Scholars flew to Portland, Oregon to visit colleges, tour the city, and explore the different landscape. Led by Program Directors Briseida Chavez and Naima Orozco with the support of mentor Almaruth, the tour was an incredible opportunity for students to experience different environments, and will inform their ideas of the colleges that will best fit their needs.
Mentor Moment
“We went to Off the Wall Activity Center and dinner for Milahn’s birthday party with Arianna and several of Milahn’s friends.” – Mentor Kelli B.
“Andrea completed her formal inspection for her police academy through school where she was one of the main representatives for her class!” – Mentor Isabel C.
“I took my mentee to Mount St. Mary’s College West Los Angeles Campus and then we had lunch.” – Mentor Ashlee Z.
“I am super proud of Natalie for her acceptances to UC Davis and SLO, and her grace and patience about being on the waitlist for UCLA!” – Mentor Sarah H.
“We went to the spring culture festival at La Plaza de Cultura y Artes. It was fun and educational! Being a festival with a Mexican background, Paulet got to teach me a few things instead of just the other way around.” – Mentor Kelly K.
“March was an exciting month! International Women’s Day was super special for me this year, as MOSTe nominated me as a Community Hero. On March 8, 2023, during the scheduled basketball game, the LA Clippers honored Dejonae Collins and me as Community Heroes. I was fortunate that Frances and Camila were able to join me at Crypto Arena and celebrate this special event with me. The scholars and I had so much fun watching the LA Clippers basketball game, as they told me it was their first time attending a basketball game.” – Mentor Elba S.
