Giving Thanks and Growing Leadership
Dear MOSTe Family,
In this season of gratitude, we thank all the donors, mentors, families, foundations and community partners who make crucial contributions to the success of our scholars and our program. The work we do truly “takes a village,” and we feel incredibly fortunate to have the support of so many diverse collaborators who help make it possible. You are appreciated!
MOSTe is grateful for grants this fall from the Dwight Stuart Youth Fund, The Rose Hills Foundation, and the Los Angeles Women’s Giving Circle, and All Ways Up Foundation. Thank you for your trust.

MOSTe in Action
Wellness Fair
In October, MOSTe hosted our first Wellness Fair, bringing members of our community – scholars, mentors, alumnae and families – together for a day of fun and restorative practices. We started off with a community yoga session, followed by activities including chalk art, gardening, and writing poetry! We’re grateful to community partners Growing Great, The Advot Project, Ally Vega and Liz Espinosa who collaborated with students throughout the day. A big thank you to Carver Middle School for allowing us to host this day on their campus!
Sharing Your Story
In this workshop, scholars learned how sharing personal stories in an interview can help them stand out as a candidate for a college, scholarship, or job. They analyzed different tactics, thought of stories that show their strengths, and practiced them with amazing volunteers. Many thanks to LA Works for hosting!
High School Highlights
Senior Writing Workspace
University of California applications are due at the end of November. MOSTe senior scholars came together with some of their amazing mentors to work on completing their essays and crossing the finish line. We also distributed free laptops to students, courtesy of our amazing community partners Human-I-T.
We are so proud of all the work scholars have put into their applications, and excited to see what the future holds! Send all of your positive thoughts to these amazing scholars!
Mentor Moment
“Camila was in Girls’ Voices Now over the summer, and learned to direct and edit a short film, “We Can Do It.” Since the moment I met Camila, her college career has always been focused on video/film production. She mentioned that MOSTe is the reason she found out about this summer program. Without MOSTe’s help, she would have not had the opportunity to learn about the technical and practical aspects of documentary filmmaking. Through the lens of a camera, she incorporated social change and let others know we can dream and accomplish our goals while making a difference in society.” –Mentor Elba S.
“I attended the senior writing workshop with Natalie, Sophia and Michelle. All the girls met at my house and we drove down together, which was a lot of fun chatting about different events. After the workshop we drove back to Pasadena and had lunch at Lavender & Honey. As we were leaving the We Work building, we encountered a huge protest by Iranian Americans over the treatment of women in Iran. That sparked a lot of questions and great discussion about women’s rights on our ride back to Pasadena. I loved it!” –Mentor Sarah H.
“We visited the Immersive King Tut Exhibit!” –Mentor Melissa I.
Alumna Umaya says: “My sister and her mentor Vicky visited the Santa Monica Pier, where they played arcade games and enjoyed boba together. I had the pleasure to join them and thought you’d love these as much as I do!”
