Tinubu will not attend the 79th UN General Assembly due to “internal issues”

President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) due to the challenges facing the country.

According to the presidency, Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead the Nigerian delegation to the meeting of the deliberative, political and representative body of the United Nations.

“President Tinubu, who returned to the country last Sunday after his trip to China and the United Kingdom, wants to focus on domestic matters and address some of the country’s challenges, especially after the recent devastating floods.

“At the 79th United Nations General Assembly, Vice President Shettima will present Nigeria’s national statement to the General Assembly, attend important side events and hold bilateral meetings,” the presidency revealed on Thursday.

The General Assembly meets annually in the General Assembly Building within the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

This year’s meeting is themed “Leaving no one behind. Acting together to advance peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations” and will take place from 24 to 28 September 2024.
