There will be no campaign at the polling stations, warns INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned political parties and candidates in Edo not to engage in electioneering beyond the midnight deadline on Thursday.

Mr. Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, gave the warning in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

Olumekun said in accordance with Section 94 (1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and item 12 of the Timetable and Programme of Activities for the 2024 Edo Governorship election, all campaigns of political parties end at midnight on Thursday.

“It is therefore unlawful for any political party in Edo State to engage in any rallies, demonstrations or media campaigns from midnight today. These prohibitions, including penalties, are provided for in Section 96 of the Electoral Act, 2022,” he said.

Olumekun also warned parties, candidates and their supporters not to show up at polling stations in their campaign uniforms or carry any campaign materials on election day.

“We urge parties, candidates and their supporters to take note of the provisions of the law in order to comply with them,” he said.
