Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett failed to get anything done on offense against the Jets on Thursday and his time as a starter could already be over.
No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye made his NFL debut during garbage time of the Jets' 24-3 win and is waiting in the wings to take over.
New England's Jerod Mayo was noncommittal about keeping Brissett as the starter after falling to 1-2.
“I don’t know,” Coach Mayo said. He told reporters Asked about a possible change, he said: “We talk about it every week… we will meet as a technical team.”
Maye was solid in his mop-up duties for New England, scrambling for an 11-yard first down and getting the Patriots into the red zone before time expired.
However, Maye took two sacks on his only series, including one on the final play, and was hit throughout his series.
Amazon Prime commentator Al Michaels said Maye received a “welcome-to-the-league punch” on his third play when he was crushed after running for a yard.
“I thought it was too good of an opportunity for him to go out and get some experience,” Mayo said. According to Mass Live.
Mayo previously declined to name a starter in the lead-up to Week 1, telling reporters that Maye beat out Brissett for the job out of camp but still gave the veteran the starting job.
“What I will say is this is a real competition … and I would say right now, Drake has outplayed Jacoby,” Mayo said before naming Brissett the starter to begin the season.
Offensive line issues are an obvious concern that could influence when the Patriots ultimately opt to make the move for the future.
Patriots quarterbacks have been sacked 11 times in three games this season, including seven on Thursday night.
However, Brissett hasn't exactly shined as a starter, ranking in the bottom five in average yards per pass attempt (5.1) and just 13 points per game (third-worst).
