New York gunman who opened fire in Jacobi's emergency room sentenced to 12 years in prison

The crazed gunman who opened fire in the emergency room at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx two years ago, narrowly missing a mother holding a baby, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Keber Martinez, 25, was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to first-degree assault for the Jan. 25, 2022, shooting that injured one man and sent dozens of staff members and patients running for shelter.

“The defendant opened fire inside Jacobi’s emergency room, wounding one man and showing a complete disregard for patients and staff, with one bullet lodged in a wall near a woman holding a baby,” Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said.

“The defendant’s violent actions have now been met with a substantial prison sentence.”

Martinez was seen on surveillance footage wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, standing at a desk inside the emergency waiting area.

He was seen pulling out a gun and running towards another man while firing several shots.

Martinez fired four shots at the 35-year-old victim, hitting him in the left arm, investigators said at the time.

Other people inside the waiting area were forced to hide under chairs and other furniture until Martinez fled the scene on foot, leaving a trail of blood leading to the victim.

The hospital was temporarily closed following the shooting, while the wounded man was taken to the operating room for treatment.

Martinez was captured about 12 hours later in Harlem, according to police.

They located him in part through information from his hospital admission, in which he complained of asthma problems.

Martinez shot a 35-year-old man four times in the hospital waiting room, hitting him in the forearm.
