Kamala Harris criticized by Oprah Winfrey for dodging questions at a campaign event in Michigan and again offers no proposals

WASHINGTON — Kamala Harris attended a star-studded campaign event hosted by Oprah Winfrey on Thursday night, who was forced to nudge the vice president to get straight to the point during a confusing response to a policy question posed by the audience.

The two-hour “Unite for America” livestreamed event from Michigan was intended to highlight grassroots organizers backing Harris and give voters a chance to ask her about her platform, but the Democratic presidential nominee did not offer any new policy proposals.

At one point in the evening, Harris was asked what she would do to secure the southern border.

“It’s a wonderful and important question. I, as you know, have experience as a prosecutor and I also served as two-term elected attorney general in the border state. So for me, this is not a theoretical question. This is something I’ve actually worked on,” Harris began her three-minute response, which ended with her criticizing Republicans for failing to pass the bipartisan border bill.

—So, to answer Justin's question, Winfrey chimed in.

“Now that that bill is gone and hasn't been passed, will you introduce it?” the billionaire talk show host asked before Harris cut him off.

“Absolutely,” the vice president replied.

“When I am elected president of the United States, I will make sure that bill reaches my desk and I will sign it into law,” Harris said, without offering any new policies on how to resolve the crisis at the southern border.

The “Unite for America” event was intended to reach a large number of voters through Winfrey’s presence and a series of simulcast platforms on social media.

A long list of celebrities including Chris Rock and Ben Stiller, who said they would vote for Harris, also tuned in to the event.

The 2024 Democratic candidate spoke at length about abortion, saying it is “immoral” to say a person “does not have the right to make a decision about what happens to their body” and to be “raped.”

Harris also reiterated that she would offer new homeowners $25,000 toward a down payment, increase tax deductions for new small business owners and the Child Tax Credit.

Winfrey, who endorsed Harris and gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention, said she has been more active and more swaggering since President Biden dropped out of the race.

“You know, we all have those moments in our lives where it’s time to step up,” Harris said of how she felt after Biden suspended his candidacy.

“I felt a sense of responsibility to be honest with you, and with that comes a sense of purpose.”

Harris launched a veiled attack on Trump, saying: “The beauty of a democracy, as long as we can hold on to it, the beauty of a democracy is that every single one of us has the power.”

The vice president had six media interviews in total before the live broadcast with Winfrey as a 2024 candidate, on track to be the fewest of any recent presidential candidate.

She also waited more than a month to present a list of policy proposals, but said she is “not Joe Biden” and that “we cannot go back” to Trump.

His campaign manager, Jen O'Malley Dillon, admitted the race was close against Trump and urged voters to go to the polls.

“While we have this extraordinary and growing enthusiasm that the Vice President and Governor Walz are seeing everywhere, we are still within a margin of error. It’s tied,” he said.

“Here in Michigan, the outcome is the same as in all the battleground states. That’s why we all need to work together to build a path, many paths, to 270 electoral votes. That’s what we’re focused on.”
