EFCC official reveals who fired the first shot while attempting to arrest Yahaya Bello

Tensions escalated on Wednesday night when gunshots were heard at the Kogi State Governor's house in Asokoro, Federal Capital Territory, during an attempt by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.

Eyewitnesses reported that the chaotic scene unfolded when EFCC operatives attempted to arrest Bello, who had earlier reported to the commission’s office but was turned away due to the presence of the Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo.

In a statement released by Bello's media office on Thursday morning, it was claimed that EFCC agents attempted to forcefully arrest the former governor by blocking access to the lodge and firing into the air.

However, sources within the EFCC who spoke to The Cable contradicted this narrative, claiming that Governor Ododo’s security team initiated the shooting upon seeing the commission’s vehicle.

An EFCC insider commented: “The EFCC agents responded in kind,” indicating that the situation quickly escalated into a tense standoff.

Amid the turmoil, reports indicate that Bello managed to escape from the lodge and left Abuja, effectively evading the efforts of the EFCC once again.

This incident follows a series of attempts by the EFCC to arrest Bello, who faces allegations of financial misconduct worth ₦80.2 billion.
