Breaking news: Seider signs a new contract to remain in Detroit for seven more seasons

The Red Wings have officially wrapped up their summer business with the announcement this afternoon that defenseman Moritz Seider has agreed to terms on a new contract, thus resolving his negotiations as a restricted free agent. According to the team's official Twitter account, Seider has agreed to a seven-year extension worth $8,550,000 per season.

Just minutes after coach Derek Lalonde said Seider's absence had not been a distraction following the final practice of the first day of training camp, Lalonde's words were confirmed and Seider will be signed. It remains to be seen when exactly Seider will be able to join his teammates in Traverse City.

Reports leading up to the Seider and Raymond signings indicated that the defenseman would end up with a bigger contract, and now that both have signed, that has proven correct at roughly a half-million dollars. Detroit couldn't match the eight-year term (the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement) it agreed to with Raymond for Seider, but seven years, of course, isn't too far off, and now Detroit has both of its budding superstars locked up for years to come. It may also be beneficial that both stars don't become unrestricted free agents for the first time in the same summer.

The Red Wings needed Raymond and Seider under contract and in top form to have any hope of realizing their season ambitions. As of this afternoon, that matter is settled and it's time to focus on the fun part on the ice.
