Ellen DeGeneres shares a cheeky joke that could have saved her from being kicked out of showbiz

Ellen DeGeneres finds the funny side of her scandal in her upcoming Netflix special.

The newly released trailer for “Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval” has just been released, showing the comedian talking about her “expulsion from showbiz.”

“The girl who said ‘be nice’ wasn’t nice — that was the headline,” DeGeneres says. “Here’s the thing: I’m a comedian who had a talk show and ended the show every day saying, ‘Be nice to each other.’ If I had ended my show by saying, ‘Fuck you,’ people would have been pleasantly surprised to find out that I am nice.”

DeGeneres' show was rocked by accusations of being a toxic workplace, as well as allegations of sexually inappropriate behavior by ousted producers.

A producer had also reportedly been at the centre of complaints about poor workplace culture.

The headlines damaged her reputation as “the nice girl,” prompting her to announce the end of her show in 2021 and apologize to the staff. The final episode aired in May 2022.

During her apology video, DeGeneres explained the origin of saying “be kind” at the end of her shows, saying it was related to the death of Tyler Clementi, who committed suicide as a teenager after being bullied for being gay.

She said: “I thought the world needed more kindness, and it was a reminder that we all needed it, and I think we need it more than ever right now.”

“Being known as the lady who says ‘be nice’ is a tough position to be in. So let me give some advice to anyone who is thinking about changing their title or giving themselves a nickname: Don’t choose the lady who says ‘be nice.’ Don’t do it,” DeGeneres added jokingly.

Before the official trailer for the special, which will air on Netflix on September 24, was released, DeGeneres toured the special in cities across the country.

DeGeneres went on to explain how her view of fame has changed since the beginning of her career.

“I used to say, ‘I don’t care what people say about me,’” DeGeneres said, according to SFGate. “I realize now that I said that during the height of my popularity.”
