Video of Titan sinking released as public hearing resumes

Startling new images show more debris from the doomed Titan submersible wreck, as a hearing into the deadly deep-sea mission resumed on Thursday.

A nearly two-minute clip shows several pieces of the sunken, makeshift ship scattered on the seabed about 2.5 miles below the surface, including pieces of the rear dome and remains of the hull.

The statement was released Wednesday evening, hours before a hearing was set to resume Thursday into the Titanic’s failed mission, which ended with the submersible imploding, killing all five on board in June 2023.

“We are releasing additional images of the Titan rescue ahead of technical testimony and exhibits,” the Coast Guard wrote alongside the latest images.

“Transparency remains our priority when providing context and information to the public.”

The chilling new footage comes two days after the release of the first clip showing the sunken ship up close, which officials said was “conclusive evidence of the catastrophic loss of the Titan submersible and the deaths of all five members on board.”

Thursday’s hearing is scheduled to hear from two former OceanGate employees: mission specialist Renata Rojas and former chief scientist Dr. Steven Ross.

The hearings follow Tuesday’s blistering testimony from OceanGate’s former director of marine operations, David Lochridge, who highlighted “egregious” flaws in the original model of the doomed Titan submersible that he refused to approve, later leading to his firing.

“It was inevitable that something would happen. It was just a question of when,” Lochridge said.

The veteran diver and submarine pilot said Tuesday that he repeatedly clashed with Stockton Rush over how the chief executive liked to “do things on the cheap.”

In addition to Rush, the implosion killed British adventurer Hamish Harding, French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet and Pakistani father and son Shahzada and Suleman Dawood.

Lochridge is one of 10 former OceanGate employees who will speak at the hearings, which continue through Friday.

The hearing is intended to “uncover the facts surrounding the incident and develop recommendations to prevent similar tragedies in the future,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.
