Trump 'safe' after shooting reported – RT World News

The former US president was at his golf club in Florida when shots were heard “in his immediate vicinity”

Donald Trump is safe and unharmed after a shooting was reported near him at a golf club in Florida, officials from the Republican presidential candidate's campaign said.

The incident occurred on Sunday at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, while the former US president was playing golf in the area.

The Trump campaign said the man was not injured and had been safely evacuated from the scene.

“President Trump is safe after gunshots were heard in his vicinity. There are no further details at this time.” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said.

The Secret Service recognized a “protection incident” involving Trump, and said on X (formerly Twitter) that it is working with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office to investigate. The incident occurred shortly before 2:00 p.m. local time, according to the service.

American media have provided multiple conflicting versions of events, with initial reports suggesting the incident did not involve Trump at all and was simply two people shooting at each other.

However, later reports on the matter indicated that the shooting was likely linked to Trump, with multiple sources telling CNN that the suspect was shot by the Secret Service. Unnamed officials briefed on the matter told the broadcaster that an armed individual intended to attack Trump.

A suspect believed to be connected to the incident has been taken into custody, the Martin County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post. A section of Interstate 95 has been closed for the ongoing investigation, it added.

“We will update this information as it becomes available.” The sheriff's office added.

The incident came just weeks after Trump survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The former president was shot in the ear while speaking at the rally, while one supporter in the crowd was killed and two others were injured. The gunman, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed at the scene by gunfire from a sniper team.
