Arteta reacts to Rayo's performance in the Champions League

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised goalkeeper David Raya last night.

The goalkeeper kept the Gunners from losing to Atalanta in the Champions League on Thursday.

Despite a poor overall performance, Arsenal managed to draw 0-0 thanks to Raya's double save from the penalty spot and afterwards.

Arteta said after the match: “We started the game very well. I think in the first 20-25 minutes we dominated a lot against a team that plays man-to-man, which is very specific and difficult to play against. I think we read the game very well and we were on top of the game.”

“Suddenly we started to have a lot of control with the ball. We started to lose all the balls, very simple ones, and we lost control of the game. We didn’t suffer at all defensively, but in one play we conceded a penalty and we needed two of the best saves I have seen from David in my career to stay in the game.

“The work with the goalkeeping coach, Iñaki (Cana), he knew (where to go) and they did the job and the execution of the first one was incredible. But the second one, I thought the ball was in, so it was very similar to Villa.

“We signed him when he was already exceptional, but we have to do it at this level and, above all, in the context in which he arrived. It was not easy at all, but he is showing the type of person he is and his role as a leader in the team. That is very important.”
