Anambra government urges residents to seize the opportunity to generate wealth through plastic

The Anambra State Government has urged residents of the state to seize the opportunity to make money from plastic waste instead of dumping it indiscriminately.

The government, through the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA), gave the order on Thursday.

According to ASWAMA’s Head of Compliance, Ikenna Nwanegbo, during a public sanitation walk in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development, Coca-Cola and TechnoServe, through the Nigeria Plastic Solutions Activities in Awka, the state capital, he said that indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste is dangerous to the environment.

He urged residents to sell these plastic waste to ASWAMA and TechnoServe to earn money instead of dumping them indiscriminately.

He said: “We call on everyone to convert their plastic waste into money by selling it to ASWAMA and TechnoServe instead of disposing of it incorrectly or indiscriminately.

“In this way, we can achieve a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Anambra State, as well as making the ecosystem safe for all.”

TechnoServe Senior Business Adviser Franklin Nwarieibe also called on the public to refrain from disposing of plastics in drains or on roads, saying such waste disposal affects the ecosystem and causes flooding.

He explained that the purpose of the awareness walk was to inform residents on how they could turn their plastic waste into economic gains by taking it to designated centres where it would be collected and offset.
