New plot twist: Video surfaces of Nigerian Navy officer resisting arrest

A video purportedly showing long-detained naval sergeant Abbas Haruna resisting arrest surfaced online on Thursday.

The whistler reported on the army's commitment to investigate the officer's imprisonment, which is said to have occurred nearly six years ago.

The development followed accusations by Haruna's spouse, who appeared on Brekete Family magazine's radio show and alleged that the military detained her husband for allegedly leaving the parade to pray.

But the videowhich has now gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), shows naval personnel resisting arrest during what appeared to be an inspection of a parade ground by a senior officer.

According to the footage, a soldier was captured approaching Haruna and attempting to disarm him.

However, Haruna was seen resisting the officer and challenging his right to demand his gun.

In the video, Haruna is seen creating a scene that led other officers to subdue him. The video then went blank and repeated gunshots could be heard in the background.

Although there has yet to be an official reaction from the military since the video surfaced, the footage suggests there may be more to the narrative presented by Haruna's wife about the reason for his prolonged imprisonment.

On Monday, the military ordered an immediate investigation into the matter and pledged to make the outcome of the probe public.

The military said: “The Headquarters wishes to assure the public that the Nigerian Armed Forces remains committed to upholding justice, equity and the rule of law.

“The military tribunal process, while meticulous, ensures impartiality, equal opportunity and justice in accordance with established military procedures and the law.

“In response to this allegation, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has ordered an immediate investigation into the matter. The outcome of the investigation will be made public in due course.

“DHQ urges the general public to exercise caution and refrain from disseminating unsubstantiated information while the investigation is ongoing.

“We assure Nigerians that the Armed Forces will ensure a prompt and transparent investigation.”
