Kongsberg strengthens US defense capabilities with missile site in Virginia

Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace has announced plans to open a new missile production facility in James City County, Virginia, USA.

Kongsberg will invest around $71 million in the new 14,000 square metre facility and another $30 million in other costs, including engineering and software. This investment will reportedly create around 180 new job opportunities.

Located near key U.S. Navy installations, the new site will assemble, upgrade and repair Naval Strike Missiles (NSM) and Joint Strike Missiles (JSM).

The company said the decision to locate the facility in the United States was “strongly influenced” by the possibility that the Department of Defense might award a multi-year procurement contract to Kongsberg.

Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace, said: “The US Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force are important customers for Kongsberg’s NSM and JSM missiles. Their demand signals gave us the predictability we needed to invest in the US.”

He added that the new site will allow them to “better serve allies in the U.S. and continue to expand that supply chain locally, creating capacity and redundancy for these critical capabilities.”

This adds to the company's recent investments in the United States. This week, it announced a $10 million expansion plan for its plant in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. In recent months, Kongsberg has also announced new missile factories in Australia. Adelaide and Newcastle.
