Cat travels 1,000 miles to return to owner's home after disappearing in Yellowstone

A fearless feline who escaped from his owners in Yellowstone National Park miraculously made the 1,000-mile journey back to his California home two months after going missing.

Benny and Susanne Anguiano were on a camping trip with their beloved house cat, Rayne Beau, earlier this year when the cat became spooked and scuttled into the brush, the Salinas couple said. he told KSBW.

The couple said they spent the rest of their trip scouring the Yellowstone forests looking for him, placing out his favorite treats and toys in hopes of luring him back.

But after days without a trace of the cat, it was reported missing.

“We had to leave without him,” Susanne told the local station. “That was the hardest day because I felt like I was abandoning him.”

Sixty days later, back in Salinas, the Anguianos received a notification from Pet Watch with Rayne Beau's microchip ID and location.

Somehow, her cat ended up in Roseville, California, at the local SPCA, about 200 miles northeast of Salinas.

A local woman found him alone on the street, realized he was someone's pet and reported him, the couple learned.

When they finally met up with Rayne Beau, he wasn't in very good shape.

“I was really exhausted,” Susanne said. “I probably didn’t have much energy to keep going.”

They hope that someone who may have crossed paths with Rayne Beau during her long journey home will hear her story and get in touch with them so they can get some clues as to how she got back to California.

“Like 'we saw it here, we saw it there' or even picked it up,” Benny said.

Kittens aside, Susanna urges all pet owners to get their pets microchipped.

“We would never have gotten it back if that hadn’t happened,” he said.
