(CNN) – About two dozen more Red Lobster locations are scheduled to close in the coming days as part of the seafood restaurant chain's bankruptcy proceedings.
A recent court filing showed the company rejected leases for 23 locations that will expire before Saturday, Aug. 31, adding to the more than 100 restaurants Red Lobster closed earlier this summer. Once the process is complete, the chain will have about 500 locations remaining, a marked decrease from the 650 it had last year.
Red Lobster is in the process of being sold to Fortress Credit Corp., a lender with experience in restaurant management that also owns Krystal, Logan's Roadhouse and J. Alexander's. The firm recently gave the seafood chain a $100 million loan to help it stay afloat.
On Monday, Fortress announced that it will appoint former PF Chang's CEO Damola Adamolekun as the new CEO of Red Lobster once the chain emerges from bankruptcy proceedings. Adamolekun left the Chinese restaurant chain in August 2023 after a four-year stint.
Poor management, competition, inflation and other factors brought down Red Lobster, which was a pioneer in the restaurant industry. Thai Union, a global seafood supplier, became Red Lobster's largest shareholder in 2020 and filed for bankruptcy four years later in May.
Under Thai Union's leadership, Red Lobster's culture became toxic, former leaders told CNN. Red Lobster cut costs, eliminated longtime suppliers and implemented strategies that backfired, such as making the $20 “endless shrimp” a permanent menu item. The chain lost $11 million on the endless shrimp deal.
The new list of restaurant leases identified as closed “will likely continue to generate losses” and the company “does not anticipate the need to operate its business in the future and may be rejected,” according to the filing.
