2024 F1 Singapore GP: Alonso after his save: “To avoid the crash with this car… I pressed all the buttons!”

Fernando Alonso has starred in one of the most striking images of the first session free practice in the Singapore GPThe Aston Martin is a difficult car to drive, and the Asturian has had to do 'magic' to avoid ending up against the wall.

On urban circuits the danger multiplies. Cars pass just a few centimeters from the walls and it is very easy to have an accident, because all drivers seek the limits and the closer they get to the walls, the more lap time they usually gain.

On one of his fastest laps, Alonso was flying and after going a little wide and stepping on the piano too much, he lost control of the rear of his car.The normal thing would have been to end up against the wall, but with two swerves, which only the best can do, the man from Oviedo has regained control of his car and has avoided what would have been an accident that would have ended his session.

Having to turn the steering wheel 180º to both sides immediately, with almost no reaction time, the Asturian has accidentally pressed one of the many buttonsThat's what F1 cars have on the steering wheel. His engineer, who may not have been paying attention to the save, asked him, perplexed, why he had pressed that button: “Just to check, did you press the pit lane entry button? Was it on purpose?”

The answer from the '14' couldn't have been more comical. With adrenaline pumping after nearly ending up against the wall, he was surprised by his engineer's question and left another of his gems on the radio: “To avoid crashing into this car… I pressed the buttons. All the buttons on the car!” he shouted. Obviously, it was unintentional, but the Spaniard joked a bit saying that he had tried pressing the buttons to see if they would achieve the miracle of avoiding the accident.
